I have OS X 10.4 Tiger and I have tried repeatedly to set up my UA email account through mail using the online supplied Outlook intructions (where's the mac instructions?) and I can not seem to get it to work. I'm sure someone has this figured out. Let me know!!

What are you specifically having problems with? Also, are you on the University of Arizona campus or off? The Outlook instructions contain the same information that you would need to set up Mail. I successfully used Mail for my entire undergrad career.

I switched from POP to IMAP. I thought it would work with either but for whatever reason it works now.

Yeah, U of A uses an IMAP mail server which is a different protocol from POP. I love IMAP and I miss it given that my new school here in New York uses a POP server.

FYI the UA e-mail system does support POP, it's what I use on Outlook 2003 on my XP machine.

The UA mail system supports both IMAP and POP, and Mail.app, both v1 and 2 work without a hitch for most people. If you find you're having any further issues with the e-mail system, feel free to give OSCR a call at 626-TECH to verify any settings or schedule an appointment with a Technical Lead.

Our campus also supports, and we encourage you to activate, secure connections on IMAP, POP3 and SMTP. Enabling security on those connections insures that your e-mail is not being intercepted and read in transit. Also, by enabling secure SMTP and SMTP login authentication, you will be able to use UAs outgoing mail server from any location. In Mail, you can set those options by clicking the Mail menu, and choosing Preferences. Click the Accounts tab at the top and click your UA mail account in the left column. Under Account Information, near the bottom you'll see a section labeled Outgoing Mail Server. Choose smtpgate.email.arizona.edu from that list, and then click Server Options. Be sure the server port is set to 465, that the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) checkbox is checked, the Authentication drop down should be set to password, and you need to type your UA NetID and password into the boxes provided. Click ok and you've just enabled secure outgoing mail. Now, back up to the Account management tabs, switch from Account Information to Advanced. Near the bottom, you'll see a box labeled "Port" and another SSL checkbox. Check the SSL checkbox and the port number should change to 993 for IMAP or 995 for POP3. Close preferences and you've now enabled encryption on your incoming mail.

You might go looking for outlook express repair (http://www.oemailrecovery.com/outlook-express-repair.html) and mail recovery service (http://www.mail-repair.com/mail-recovery-service.html). I have been using it without problem since it came out.
