My windows has been freezing for most of today. It all started with the latest patches that Microsoft released for August and now my system is completely unstable. I have noticed that it likes to freeze when I'm surfing the net with Firefox, when playing Guild Wars and when my system is idle running my screensaver. I believe my screensaver and Guildwars are both OpenGL but that doesn't explain why it freezes in Firefox. Anyone have the slightest clue as to what's happening?

When was the last time you created a system restore point? You might want to look and see if one was created before you updated Windows because one should have been automatically created. If one was, a suggestion would be to roll back to that previous restore point.

I would recommend calling 520-626-TECH to make an appointment with a Technical Lead. Without actually being at your machine I can't see what's going on. Your symptoms are fairly vague but typical of virus activity and/or spyware. We can assist you in resolving this issue during a scheduled appointment.

Is this system a desktop computer or laptop? If it is a laptop I suggest you bring it by any of the OSCR labs as we should be able to debug your problem. If it is a desktop computer then perhaps a better description of what you were running when it happened such as Anti-Virus software, P2P Software etc etc. You can download a program called HiJackThis and post the log of what it finds here. It could be that you just have some spyware or a virus.
However, from what you have said about Running in OpenGL mode, have you tried switching GW, and your screensaver over to D3D mode? You may also need to update your Video Card drivers as well. You can find your video card drivers at the Manufacturers website or from the actual chipset maker, which in today's world is typically Nvidia and ATI.

I just noticed you wrote OpenGL...for games you should be using Direct3D whenever possible. Most consumer gaming cards are designed to run games via D3D. OpenGL should really be left to business/non-consumer rendering utilities like SolidWorks.

I too have been freezing since around the August Microsoft patch Tuesday... so I dedusted the hardware, reseated it all, then reinstalled the OS (WinXP) and some of my applications... and still have freezes... BUT... I FOUND SOMETHING!
I believe they are related to the latest Yahoo! Messenger v7.0.0.426 application. I noticed that the new Yahoo was released around the same time as the patches, so I started to test it. From my preliminary testing, I notice that the freezes occur when Yahoo is running or has been started at least once on the system.
So far, I have yet to see the freeze problem since telling Yahoo to not start at Windows startup. I'm 80% confident that this is a Yahoo problem. I wish there was a better way to debug Windows freezing problems.

Just remove the Yahoo Messenger if you believe it is causing problems. You can use a free alternative called Trillian that allows you to run AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and any other messaging service you want all at once.
You can download it at www.trillian.cc .

Wow. You must really think I have no intelligence.
I want to use Yahoo, I can't use Yahoo, I will wait until it is fixed, verifying that it is indeed the problem. So far, I believe it is the cause of my freezing, and I posted here because someone else was having problems similar to mine starting at the same time as mine, and I thought I could help.
If I wanted a Trillian ad, I would have done a Google search for it. :) But thanks for the advertisement.
I seriously hopes somebody finds this thread useful.

Are you using a webcam with Yahoo? I did some quick searches and found that there are many people with webcams who report Yahoo! Messenger crashing at random.

It could be related to many different things. First off, what Operating system are you running? Windows XP?
