I burned my first dual-layer DVD+R today. OfficeDepot had a buy one get one free on 3-packs of Verbatim's DL discs so I picked up a few.

God...it is SLOW to burn. My laptop's drive is only rated at 2.4x for dual-layer burning (approx. 3.2MB/sec). I was burning about 7.73GB of data and it took close to 45 minutes, about 20 per layer. I was so used to burning at 8x.

Twice as much data at 1/3 the speed = ouch. Does anyone know the actual burn strategy for DL? I know when I burn a standard +R or -R it increases the speed as it gets further into the disc. Is it the same for DL, or are both layers burned at a constant 2.4x?

Either way, I highly recommend getting one of the newer 4x/5x DL drives.
