my familys computer was set up by my stepfather and he apparently changed the administrative username/password from the original default. my mother and him have since divorced and i am just now running into this problem because i am trying to open my router ports so as to get some better results out of the bittorrent i recently downloaded. we have XP and my account is the only administrative account but unfortunately this username and password do not work for this situation. i guess its a seperate kind of administrative power. anyway, i have no idea what the username or password is, which i need to forward my router ports. so my question is, is there any way to find this out, so i dont have to reformat the entire hard drive?

For clarification purposes:
You are the administrator for your computer correct? What you are trying to do is connect to your router (through your browser)? Is this correct? And finally what you Don't know is the username/password that is prompted to you when you try to connect to said router correct?

If so, if I am correct, I believe the simplest solution is to disconnect power from the router for 10-20 seconds. When you plug it back in, the router should restart and flush all the old settings and return to factory defaults. If that doesn't work, you can unplug it for 10 seconds, plug it back in, find the reset switch (typically on the back of your router) and hold it in until the router gives you a sign that is has been reset. Under a linksys router the power light would begin to flash, at which point you would stop pushing the reset button and eventually it will return to a solid green light indicating the reset has been completed.

Either of these methods should restore the router to factory defaults at which point, username: admin password: (no password) should work, or whatever the factory default admin/password was.

Thanks for your prompt reply and help. You were correct in your assumptions. I tried completely disconnecting it and it did nothing as far as I could tell. I have a westell 2200 and i see no reset buton to try your other suggestion. At the top of the login window that pops up it says modem secure if that helps you any. I'm really running out of ideas here, I'v been trying to do this for a few days straight now. Anything else you can offer me would be greatly appreciated. thanks again!

Here's a pdf manual for the Westell 2200:

http://www.westell.com/content/verizon/2200_userguidec.pdf

Page 8 shows where the reset button is. After you reset, the default login and password would be "admin" and "password".
