Windows Updates Fail

Downloads of windows updates for WIn98SE and IE 6.0 won't start. Keeps generating errors to report to Microsoft. Links to "troubleshooting" and other sites within download section do not open pages. Reinstalled IE 6.0 from program files- made no difference.

I would suggest scanning for viruses and spyware. They've been known to interfere with updates. We'd be happy to help you scan, just call 626-TECH and set up an appointment.

THere is current antivirus software running, with auto update, and frequent antispyware scanning with 5 different programs. So it seems unlikely to be that.

My suggestion: Backup everything that's important, and do a new install of 98.. or 2000... or XP. Assuming, that is, that your machine can handle either of the newer OSs, and that you have access to them.

If explorer is corrupted in a way that a reinstall of IE doesn't fix, it means, in my experience, that the whole install of the OS is on it's way out.

I would suggest taking up the offer of the free scan though. Your anti-virus and spyware programs may be hijakked by some particularly nasty stealth bug so that they can't see it. As our scan runs directly off of the CD, that risk is minimized. It's free, so there's nothing to loose, other than a half an hour - hour of your time.
