Hi,

i am currently having trouble hearing through my new headset... i know that it is not the headset itself becuase i bought a new one and it is great, anyway i have tryed phoning the company that the product is made from and i am told that they are not open till like weekdays and guess what ti is friday night :(.

So the PC itself is to blame... but also i can speak through the mic on my headset and the sound goes to other people but i can hear nothing at all, i also have some files on the device manager which has one (!) which i think is causing the problem but i do not know how to fix it...

Ok, so i have Audio Codecs, Advance AC`79 Audio For VIA (R) Audio Controller, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices, Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver ( Note: Its Got An (!) Mark On It ), MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device, Standdard Game Port, Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device, USB Audio Device, Video Codecs.

Right, above is all the devices in Sound, Video And Game Controllers and one last thing i also get the message when im trying to record my own voice on sound recorder ( error ) " Another application is recording audio. Stop recording with this other application and then try to record with Sound Recorder again.

Thanks, Giwin.

Try uninstalling the 'Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver' entry in your devices and reboot the computer. Your issue is also related in this forum post on Lockergnome (http://help.lockergnome.com/index.php?showtopic=35789&mode=linearplus).

If that doesn't work, try visiting www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com/) and selecting the 'Custom' button to check for updates. Once finished checking, on the left-hand menu there is a 'Hardware, Optional' type link. There could possibly be a driver update for the 'Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver'. If there is, mark the check box next to it for download, and then 'Review and install updates'.

You can call (520) 626-TECH for additional assistance if you do not feel comfortable with performing this. Please let us know if this did or did not solve your problem.

I had the same problem that Giwin did, (with Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver not working, nothing about the headset) and I deleted it and my sound now works. Do I need to redownload it, and if I do, where should I?

If you have an answer, I'd be greatful if you could contact me at

AIM: Apocalidiot

or just in this thread.

Thanks.

If your sound is working after, then you shouldn't have to worry about reinstalling it etc.

I'm having the same problem, I uninstalled the WNMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver after it had the !, and when that didn't fix anything, I searched windows update for extra hardware, but found nothing. I might mention that though I have everything installed for my Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit, under the device manager, and under 'other devices' there are two large yellow question marks. one is the PCI modem, which I don't need, having an ethernet card, and the other is 'multimedia audio controller', which I definitely DO need. some help, please.

Does your board have an integrated sound controller? That's what the multimedia audio controller probably is.
Most on-board sound is AC'97, you can find drivers for that online pretty easily. If that doesn't do it for the on-board sound, look at the model number of your PC (or motherboard if it was a custom build) and find the integrated sound card type that way.

Another possibility:
You may need to either look on the board itself, or in the BIOS, for a setting to switch cards so that the on-board sound is disabled, leaving everything to your soundblaster.

Hey ppl, i need some hlp, iv got an acer travelmate 3260 with ALC883 audio codec/realtek high def. audio. Problem is when i insert headphones into the line out/spdif, i get no sound through the headphones but as soon as i pull out the jack, the sound works perfectly through the built in speakers. iv deleted the winmm audio driver along wid some other sound criteria but it still dont work. iv tried updating the realtek drivers and tried older version but nothing. Iv even installed xp again and the sound through the headphones work perfectly but after 2-3 windows restarts it goes bust again, the closest i got to success was the R32 driver which works, only problem is when the headphones are connected i get sound through the headphones and the built-in speakers at the same time.(p.s the headphones work perfectly)

This problem has really got me on da edge, plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz help

Well if the sound doesn't re-route automatically from the speakers to only the headphones when you plug in headphones to the headphone jack, sounds like something wrong w/ the laptop to me, since that kinda defeats the purpose of having a headphone jack. I'd personally call Acer and see what they have to say about it. Also, you can always bring it into the OSCR Help Desk on Monday, we've got walk-ins from 9-4 all week.

it was recently replaced to a new device but same one exactly
I didnt have any problems what so ever in the begining with reinstalling it and it worked perfectly with music editing programs
how ever, sound never came out through windows media player/vlc/just general windows(xp)
on "audio devices" the only choice I had was "soundmax" driver or nothing,
on top of everything today the "WINMM WDM audio compatibility" is not functioning and I have no Idea where to download a new one from...

yeah, iv got the same problem with my Realtek ACL883 soundcard, but i cant find any problems with any devices or civers in the device manager. i hav an Acer travelmate 2480, but it isnt running linux as it was supplied with, its got Windows XP instead. to make it even worse, the problem seems to be intermittent, occassionallt rearing its ugly head, invariably when i want it to work.

Hello,

My name is Daniel and I need some help. I am a computer technician who is coming to the end of his wits because Microsoft doesn't make anything easy like Apple has done. Basically, I need to get headsets to work with my PC's in a lab but I cannot get anything recorded with my headset. I know they work because I looked at input level indicator on a Mac OS X computer and indeed it was registering. However, I cannot get the same thing from my Win XP computers. SOUNDMAX is the name of the device I have installed (among other generic devices). XP has SP2, and has all the regular updates installed. Can anyone help?

The name and type of my headset currently is Labtec - LVA 8012.
And tomorrow is the last day for me to fix this.

If you have any idea please email me at djl0320@lausd.net

I too have somewhat of the same problem. I turned off my Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driverand then I could not get any sound, it would not let me turn it back on and I accidentally deleted it. I was wondering if there was any site that anyone could recommend to download it. I tried to use windows update but it didn't work. E-Mail me at: mbhitman@yahoo.com

There's a rash of boutique (custom) players on the web for video and so missing codecs or corrupted drivers might be the cause.

1. Incompatible codecs installed together (often no prior notice exists ) can cause system corruption or mysterious OS bugs. Solution => Download an comprehensive, integrated codec pack that will also check& remove invalid/non-functioning codecs at the end of install. I favour:
http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

2. If you get a persistent error with audio/video software, but no error in device manager ("Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc"), and codec is not an issue you should uninstall the manufacturers system installation completely, manually delete any relevant drivers not uninstalled, uninstall the device in device manager (r-click icon -> [Uninstall]) - , reboot when prompted and then reinstall afresh. Corruption can occur if you have altered audio system settings back and forth quickly/repeatedly while troubleshooting the correct options settings.

Windows and Linux drivers for the AC'97 codec can be found at:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

It's free there. Also, if you're updating your audio driver, don't forget to uninstall the old driver (and any utilities that go along with it) before installing the new one.

Wow, 3 years on and i manage to find my old topic... i'm now here with a new problem believe it or not but i can sort it out, i guess the codec i had to uninstall was to do with HDMI because i'm now trying to output the sound from my HDTV instead of my headphones.

good to see this topic is still going after 3 years lol.
