Hey everyone,

So my mom is using a 400 MHz G4 tower with an ATI graphics card (can't see which model which will be explained later, but its the one that came with the computer) that has a VGA and DVI port on it. Her 17" studio monitor crapped out so she asked if I thought that a new 20" DVI one would work on her machine. I said that so long as there was a DVI card, it would likely work. So anyway, she goes out and gets the monitor and properly hooks it up (plugged into a power source, connected to the Firewire/USB ports, connected to the DVI port, etc.) and boots the machine. The screen comes on with the mac boot screen (grey/white background with the grey apple and spinning thing) and then the screen goes black. I know the screen works because I connected it to my powerbook that I have here and all is well. So, I can't figure out what is wrong unless the graphics card just can't support 20" of monitor. Any questions/suggestions?

Turns out the answer is that the graphics card can't support a 20" monitor. I ended up solving the problem by using an DVI/ADC adapter from Dr. Bott to attach my older ADC 17" apple display to the older computer and then used a ADC/DVI adapter to attach the newer model to my computer. All is well.
