The logic behind the move -

AMD just released over 900 pages of specs for ATI's video cards (and more is on the way), and next week is the expected release of the new open-source driver for their R500/600 (the Radeon x1X00 and x2X00 series) video cards.
This is really awesome - AMD/ATI have finally listened to the OSS crowd asking for better drivers and straight-up handed them the specs (literally - they were handed over at the end of the X Developer Summit). Depending on just how good these drivers turn out to be in the coming months, I may start recommending ATI cards again to people who ask (I've tended to be pro Nvidia because of their much better Linux support).
