Here's the deal. I'm at home right now for Easter and remembered I had my dad's old workstation sitting in the closet. I installed Windows on it and set it up in my basement. it is currently hooked into our home network.

The home network consists of a Linksys wireless router. Most of our computers access the Internet via wireless. The old workstation is hardwired into the Linksys router. We use DHCP in the router.

I set the old workstation to a static IP address, 192.168.1.110. In the Linksys router, I set up Port Forwarding for Remote Desktop to send all TCP3389 requests to 192.168.1.110 (the old workstation).

I can RDP into the other machine just fine within our own network. I am having problems doing it from outside our network. To RDP in, you have to know the router's IP address. I found it by going to www.whatismyip.com. Even if I enter this into the RDP window, it cannot contact the address. I even tried to turn off the options in the router for block IDENT requests and allowed to to receive pings.

Ideas? I want to be able to RDP into this machine at home when I'm at school. Help is greatly appreciated, as I fly back Monday afternoon.

i realize this isnt the answer, but this site has a pretty good walkthrough for remote desktop even though it seems like you've set it up correctly. cant hurt right? :)
http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-remote-desktop-overview.html

you can try also changing the default port number remote desktop uses... http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/sbs-remote-desktop-change-port.html

edit: my microsoft wireless router lets me forward 3389 and it works fine for connecting to my comp at my house from on campus so i dunno

I remember when I setup VNC once that I had to allow traffic on two ports, not just one. The initial request and exchange of information had one port, and then once the session is open, it went on another port. Although, that's probably not the problem here. So maybe it's a firewall setting? I would just try turning all the firewalls off for a (very) short time and give it a try.

My problem lies more within what is the IP address I need to RDP into from the outside. I *thought* it was the one I was shown at www.whatismyip.com, but apparently not.

I don't think you can do it because the address that you get from whatismyip is not a static address, it's the outside address of your gateway not even your computers's ip. it's simply how your computer is seen outside in the internet and verylikely your router is the one doing the translation to make sure traffic is routed to your computer and the specific port where that's going to... you need to setup VPN or pay for static address!.. good luck

try using orb or symatic's pcanywhere.. you gotta install that on both pc's... that will get you the virtual access that you're looking to get for free without setting up VPN

Two even easier ways. First, try Hamachi which will set up an automatic free no hassle VPN. Just install on the two computers and make an account. Second you can do as long as the ports are forwarded is to set up a no-ip.com account and have the IP address forwarded when the external IP changes.
