Hi all. I'm looking for suggestions for good external hard drives and where to buy them. Any ideas? Thanks.
If you're not averse to "some assembly required," it's normally cheapest to build your own external hard drive. Just check http://www.newegg.com - you can get a big hard drive for very little cash and a USB External enclosure for maybe $20.
If you want to buy a prebuilt external hard drive, http://www.newegg.com is still a great place to go - I like Western Digital MyBook drives and Seagate external drives, personally (Seagates because they're my favorite hard drive brand with the best (5-year!) warranty, and Western Digital because they're quite cheap).
I have bought lots of computer parts from www.newegg.com and never had a problem with them. Also to help decide on which external hard drive you would like to get, their site has lots of reviews and other helpful stats.

Cheap external case from computer parts store + any hard drive
Cheap, upgradeable, and gives a lot of flexibility.

I totally agree with Dane's suggestion, Newegg and Western Digital rock my socks. At last check, SWS in town also has like a $20 hard drive sled you can use, plus they'll give you a 5% discount if you show your UA ID when you buy it. I was going to buy one for my friend, but they unfortunately were already closed when she needed one.

Western Digital MyBook drives can be had fairly cheap these days -- $100 gets you at least 160GB from Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.

On Newegg, $90 can get you a 250GB WD MyBook - and $160 gets you 500GB(!).
Man, that's about the same price as a plain 500GB drive and an enclosure...
