Does anyone have any info on the "rate limiting" that happens on UAPublic? Either it is set really high, or there is no real rate limiting.

FYI this is over UAPublic in McClelland Hall. I have the VPN client running (v5.0). The card is an Intel 3945 w/packet bursting enabled, driver version 11.0.

Rate limiting on UAPublic? This is the first I've heard of it - down in the Zone with my iBook and AfterTheMac USB Dongle (Ralink RT73 chipset, OS X Driver 1.1.7.0), I routinely pull 900+ KB/sec when downloading from really good servers.

//Though I'm often not using VPN then

EDIT: My own very unscientific testing, performed LIVE right here in the MLL with my iBook

Used http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ to do bandwidth testing. I used the L.A. server.

Without VPN:

So theoretically, VPN hurts the performance (though it's still faster than what I get at home from Cox), and without VPN, I peak at around 12Mbps.

If there is any rate limiting going on, it must not be very effective.

Wireless connections have so much noise and interference that I doubt you'd be able to max things out. Interesting screenshots, Dane...thanks.

But yes, supposedly UAPublic is rate-limited. I would have expected them to drop it much lower than 12Mbps, lol.

BTW I can get 16Mbps w/o VPN in McClelland. VPN connections add a lot of overhead (with IPsec and such), which is probably why it appears slower.
