View Full Version : Vista PEAP still broken (for UAWiFi)? Why?

LSU has a similar setup and it seems to work PERFECTLY fine for them. So the problem can't be blamed strictly on Microsoft. Why hasn't some smart network admin at the UA figured this out yet?

It is my understanding that both UA and Cisco have had to turn to Microsoft on a fix (since neither knows the way to get this working).
So it's not really all that easy.

Dan,
Thanks for the quick response.
Don't you think that this is kind of a big deal now? A lot of people are upgrading to vista, and I remember this being a problem here at UA waaay back when the first Vista beta came out. That's a looooong time for a fix to come out... Idk, just seems like this is kind of a big deal to me. I would think that there would be some temporary workaround out by now for us new Vista users who are SOL. On UAPublic I can only access the internet through a web browser, not through any other program.....
Regards,
Eric

Rest assured that they're working on it. Vista is small a very small percentage of users at this point, but it will of course get larger as time goes on.
For the time being, UAPublic + VPN client seems to work okay. A bit more cumbersome, but it'll do for now.
As it is there are still problems with certain older Intel wireless chipsets and the Cisco access points (the 2200BG is the worst offender apparently). Newer (2915, 3945, 4935, etc) don't have the problem, nor do Broadcom and other non-Intel vendors.

LSU uses a totally different security certificate then the UofA (which makes a difference). The only noticeable similarity in the setups is the peap setting & the type of encryption that's being used. There is tons of other factors that go into this such as the hardware that's being used, the type of authentication, etc...
If you can't live without UAWiFi and the VPN isn't an option.....going back to XP generally is.

Thanks, I will look into the VPN thing, had not heard of that option.
The U of A's SiteLicence version of the Cisco VPN client isn't Vista compatible (regardless of what they say), but the beta VPN client from this site - http://vpnclient.clearchannel.com/ - will work with Vista. You will have to get the .pcf profile from http://sitelicense.arizona.edu to be able to connect, but UAPublic+Cisco VPN works just fine for me when I want to surf with encryption while on campus.
EDIT: Nevermind. http://vpnclient.clearchannel.com doesn't appear to be up anymore. Only VPN Client 5.0 (I have version 5.00.090K9) works with Vista in my experience, and that site had it.

Just run a Google search, it's not very hard to find the VPN 5 client.
Roll back to XP if you want a hassle-free experience. I personally prefer Vista on my laptop -- I get an extra 30 minutes of battery life!

LSU doesn't even use the same hardware Arizona does. LSU uses the Cisco Aironet 1200/350 APs, where as Arizona uses the Cisco Aironet 1130 Series.
btw for those to are complaining about the tech fee, I haven't been able to find a place that sells our wireless APs for under $400, granted I assume we get some sort of education/volume discount but still none the less.
Neither school's APs appear to support any sort of 802.11N, so we'll see how that works once N becomes finalized as to whether or not Arizona will need to replace all the APs they just put in or if they will simply need something such as a firmware update.

They use the same Cisco IOS, though. Ohio State apparently uses the same setup as us with Aruba Networks instead of Cisco.
In my opinion, there is no excuse for this not working. Vista has been working and stable for months and months, and here we are, 3 months after RTM with NO IDEA when it's going to be fixed. I'm personally tired of telling clients 'UAWiFi doesn't working with Vista' without an ETA. But 'tis life.
The 1200s are upgradeable, don't know about the 1130s.

My suggestion is to update your wireless card drivers from the manufacturer's website. It's actually EASIER to get on UAWiFi with Vista than XP.
