I would like to chat to my father, who operates a Mac (I have a PC).
It seems that there are only a few pieces of communication software that will work with sound AND vision in this config. Do we need to be running the same cams? I think not but I have been told it might not be that simple a questions...?
TIA

You could use Trillian Pro, which is for PC. AIM and MSN messenger also support video conferencing.
On the Mac, just use iChat AV.

Skype works well for audio / video cross platform, as long as you're willing to share your bandwidth with the rest of skype users.
iChat on the mac can video conference with AIM on a windows PC. I've had better results with this when I login to iChat with an AIM account than with a .Mac account.
Yahoo Messenger also has camera support on the Mac now, although I have not tested how this works cross platform.
Cameras are largely unimportant, as long as each computer can see and use the camera, the computer on the other end won't care.

It's not out yet, but Qnext 3.0 is promising to be a killer IM program, even better than Trillian 3 Pro.
