count your blessings? (i hate the default "start navigation sound")
seriously though, when you choose your alert sound and click the play button, is there any sound then? Sounds like your sound folder might have been moved/deleted/renamed/corrupted... find a wav file and put it on your desktop, and for your sound setting, choose the desktop file and click the > play button and see if that works.
maybe look at rolling back to a previous restore point?

Hi!
Yes, exectly what you said but both of. I have the same problem. I have tried reinstall the sound drivers, but nothing has changed. I can play videos and music in different players, but i have no windows sounds at all. The microsoft mixer icon has gone also.

If you've completely ruled out software as the cause, then yes, it's probably a faulty sound card.

Hi. I have a cyber acoustics microphone. My problem is pretty weird: yesterday, my mic was working (I was talking to people on Day of Defeat, so i know it was working), but today they couldn't hear me. I tried to do the microsoft sound recorder thing, but it wasnt picking up anything. Here is the weird part: when I unmuted the thing so my microphone sound came out of my speakers, it worked. Everything I said came out loud and clear from my speakers, but it wont record anything in the sound recorder and it wont work in the day of defeat microphone test. I haev been through ALL of the microphone and sound options, including all the advanced things and properties, and all the volume is turned up and nothing is muted (except the thing that keeps it from coming out of my speakers when i talk, but it wouldnt record even with that unmuted and all the way up). I dont know where to search for updated drivers for this, but im pretty sure that isnt the problem since its working out of my speakers. Oh yeah, i tried both the mic ports on the front and back of my computer, so its not that. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

There are so many things that could be causing this that I would reccomend making an appointment with the OSCR underground at 626-TECH, if you are a UofA student.

Try to check in Advanced option in volumn control. Is the Wave component under playback has been muted or set to volumn 0? It's been my case but I cannot figure out what is the cause.

Hey just found the reason i couldn't use my microphone after trying to record.
Hope this helps
Go to sounds and audio devices in control panel
click voice & test hardware
After testing hardware my windows firewall was blocking it.. I chose to unblock it and also the dll file was being blocked.. I chose to allow both and voila
all is fixed
Good luck :)

Hey all, just updated my Realtek driver and canno thear any windows sounds yet my cd has souns, itunes plays windows media player has sound. Any idea? I tried rolln gback to orig driver no dice. Tried updating driver again no dice HELP!
I lost windows sound alerts and sound in adobe flash player for unexplained reason. Probably a trojan or win xp update. Win Media Player, QuickTime and game sounds still worked. After many hours of research I found a fix. Open my computer, click local disk C, Click windows, click system32. Scroll a long way down looking for a file folder named msacm32. It should be right before msacm32.dll. If it is missing, this is almost certainly the problem.
I copied this file folder from a machine running win xp pro, service pack 2 (right click folder, send to 3.5 floppy, normally on "A" drive).
On my system, I opened my computer, local disk C, windows, system32. With this window opened, I opened "my computer" again(Both windows opened), inserted floppy, clicked "A" drive to see contents. Drag and drop file folder from "A" to an open space in system32. I allowed 30 seconds just to be sure it was there. Next mouse click I had sound. I have win xp media center, service pack 3. There are numerous other avenues to pursue. Most are more complicated. None of them worked for me. www.mydigitallife.info has more computer literate info about this.
