Allright I have looked over a lot of sites including microsoft and I still havent got an answer.
Allright im sure you have probably heard this before but here goes, I can hear people with my headset but I cannot talk to them with my microphone.
Im guessing the problem lies with my voice and audio settings so heres some information.
Audio default devices
Sound Playback-Realtek AC97 Audio
Sound Recording-Realtek AC97 Audio
Voice default devices
Voice Playback-Realtek AC97 Audio
Voice Recording-Realtek AC97 Audio
Im pretty sure it has something to do with the voice defaults but I dont know how to change them so thats why I posted here.
Please help

Also when I run "Sound Hardware Test Wizard" and try to move on to the next step it says "Make sure your microphone is properly connected to your computer and that it is turne on. When you have checked the connection, click back to try the microphone test again" and after you do that and it fails again it says "If your voice is still not detected, you will be able to hear what other people are saying online, but they will not be able to hear you."

A few things to check, sorry if they're too obvious, but even the most obvious things can slip by even the best from time to time:
1. Does your mic actually work/is it unmuted? Like, if you connect it to another computer that is set up right, do you get audio input?
2. Is your mic plugged in in the right audio jack (usually pink/red)?
3. If you go start>programs>accessories>entertainment>volume control and display everything by going to options>properties and enabling every option, is the mic volume up/unmuted?
4. In that volume control panel, if you change your mixer device to th input option and enable everything, is everything up/unmuted?
and finally:
5. Are your drivers updated?

Well I noticed something interesting today, one of my friends was helping me by staying on voice chat while I tried to figure out what was wrong, he could hear himself talking and if I turned on my microsoft narrator he could hear that too but for some reason not my voice, also when I got a hardware update from realtek (brand name) the hardware could not be found a driver or something of that sort and all my sound went out so I had to do a system restore.
I have checked allmost everything I can think of, made sure it was plugged in, double checking to make sure everything was unmuted, I dont know what to do now.
I also found out something interesting it seems im not the only one with this problem, I went to realteks support and under Team Speak problems allmost everyone had the same problem and they usually started up after a reboot.

Sounds like the playback-capture loopback is selected and not your microphone for recording.

So how would I change that? start>>>>control panel>>>>>sund speech and audio devices. and after that what do I do?

Well I tried that, if I turn on the mic boost it gets a very faint reading from the sound of it.
Thanks, any other suggestions?
Also im running a modem if that might have anything to do with it.

If you'd like to make an appointment, we'd be happy to troubleshoot this issue for you. It can sometimes be difficult to fix problems like these over the Internet because we simply can't see everything.
Call 626-8324 to set up an appointment if you'd like.

It's possible that your sound card allows you to record the sound that is coming out instead of the mic. I know I can do that on my laptop.. that could be why they hear themselves instead of your Mic. Try checking these settings...
First go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio. Then the Audio tab. In the "Sound Recording" section make sure it is your sound card that is selected and not something else.
Now go to the Volume tab and under the "Device Volume" there is a box next to "Place volume icon in the taskbar" check that to make it easier to get to the next part in the future. Next click the Advanced button in the Device Volume section and it should open the volume sliders for all the devices.
Now go to Options...Properties... and dot "Recording" then check anything under "Show the following volume controls" and click OK.
Now the volume sliders for the recording devices will be shown, make sure microphone is checked and the slider is up.
See if that does anything (also, I'm pretty sure in the playback menu if you uncheck mute all that does is play your voice through the speakers as you speak which can cause an echo).

Go back to the Volume Control... Options... Properties... then there should be a box that says "Show volume controls for..." Put a check in microphone box.

If you're a UofA student, faculty or staff member, you should bring your computer to the OSCR Underground. Call 626-TECH to make an appointment, or come in during walk-in hours Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Unfortunetly, this kind of problem is very difficult to troubleshoot over the internet, and the personal attention of one of our fine techleads should help resolve the problem.

You have to check the "mute" box under microphone in the playback options. That will stop playing it through the speakers.
If you don't see that as an option double click on the speaker in the corner (or go to control panel...sounds and audio...advanced button under device volume) then go to Options... Properties..... Make sure the "Playback" circle is dotted and then there's a box at the bottom that says "Show the following volume controls" and check Microphone. Now click ok and check the "mute box".
If you have it muted in the playback and your voice is not being recorded in programs or working for voice-chat software than you probably don't have the microphone selected (dot Recording circle after the "Properties" step above and make sure microphone is checked in the box below. Then click ok and check "select" under microphone and adjust the recording volume).

I'm sorry I am being a nuisance to myself and others but the problem is as follows:
Under playback, the mute box for Microphone is checked. When I go to recording, everything is open but the only two select boxes I can check are "Sterio Mix" and "SPDIF". I cant check any of the other boxes under record and thats what I need help with. I know it works when Microphone is selected under Recording control but it wont let me select the box under it.

Ah-ha, that is strange. When you go to the Properties in the Volume control at the top there is a drop down that is labeled "Mixer Device" is there only one choice there? If there is more than one try selecting another one.
If there is only one I would suggest making an appointment with the Underground to have that checked out. Or you could try uninstalling sound card's drivers that are currently installed and installing newer drivers. Sounds to me like there is something funky going on with your sound card.

Ok, I had a variation of the problem you guys seem to be trying to tackle, and here is how I fixed it:
1 - go to control panel
2 - go to the voice tab
3 - click the "test hardware..." button
4 - let it test hardware
5 - speak into your mic then press next
6 - click volume under mic and play it by ear until you find/disable
what was causing the problem.

if you all have the realtek, and your record is stuck on something, check in your realteck software for the setting for the spdif. that should be on no output or digital only, if the analog & digital are checked, it will freeze you on sterio mix most of the time. hope this helps
Exactly this helped
i have aspire 1350 with ac97
setting s/pdif-out to digital only let me to select input from mic intead of stereo mix(did echo)
thanks again

For my computer i have AC'97 codec and it has a Sound Effect Manager in the control panel. This is how i fixed mine.
1) open Sound Effect Manager from control panel.
2) click the S/PDIF Output tab.
3) Put the dot in the No Output option.
4) Click OK to exit SE Manager.
5) Open Sound and Audio Devices from control panel.
6) click Volume button on the recording section.
7) Check Select on the microphone area. ( if the microphone doesn't show click options-> properties and check microphone.)
8) close the control panels
Apparently the S/PDIF setting messes up the codec and won't let it use anything else while it has that kind of outout.

Ok dudes, anyone who owns a Realtek AC'97 sound card and can't CHECK their MICROPHONE selection under recording option because it won't allow you to, follow these steps and i can guarantee you it will work:

Hi,
exact same problem. I know this is just starting to repeat itself, but I just need one more help. I've done the whole volume control thing, except all I have is Mono mix and stereo mix (no microphone option) I've tried to renew drivers etc but all I got was a Code 10 error message, so I had to do a roll over to the old... which didn't change my problem at all!
For my computer i have AC'97 codec and it has a Sound Effect Manager in the control panel. I thought that the above post would help me, except I don't have a S/PDIF Output tab... so I can't change the "no output" option. Any ideas? I would be a very happy man if someone could help me out.
Cheers
