Lundell Settlement (http://www.lundellsettlement.com/)
There was a class-action lawsuit covering the Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook computer. It is targeted at a faulty design that causes overheating, motherboard damage, or power supply damage.
I suggest checking this out if you or someone you know owns this computer.

I bought a Dell 5150 two years ago and it recently crashed. I refuse to send it in for repairs to get fixed and they wont do anything to help me. I hope that Dell loses this lawsuit and everyone that has this laptop will receive a new one or can get it fixed.

Wait, you want help, but you won't get it repaired. I think I know the solution to your problem.

Still, it was only two years ago, and with laptops anything less than a 3-year warranty is a little flaky...

If you're a DIY'er, many spare parts are available on eBay.

I have a problem with a 5150, but it isn't like it's completely dead...
It powers on, fine, boots the black dell screen, and comes to a point where you are invited to enter a system password. As soon as I enter this password, BAM, it shuts off immediately. Black screen, no power.
Now, from what I have heard, most people say it just heats up, fan powers on all the time at full speed, and sooner or later, likely 14 or so months later, it dies completely.
Is this laptop I have here salvagable yet? I mean, could it be an OS problem? Incidentally, I cannot get any CD disc to boot from to work, as it asks for an admin password to set the boot sequence up, and as soon as you hit enter, BAM, off it goes again.

That sounds like the hard drive password. Is there a code on the screen at anytime (a mixture of like 8-12 letters and numbers?). Try unplugging the hard drive and then boot from a CD. If it works, it's definantely that. I've heard of 5150s spontaneously gaining an HD password. Call Dell Tech Support and they should be able to fix you up if that is indeed the case.
If you're a student here at U of A, you can bring it into the Underground on tuesday from 9-4 and have us look at it and try to diagnose as well, but ideally Dell should know exactly what's wrong...this isn't the first time it has ever happened to someone.

Just so you all know, I called dell after reading the legal document found at
www.lundellsettlement.com which I sould suggest ANYONE who has a problem with their inspiron 5150. Especially if you have a power problem (such as mine) or a motherboard problem. Even if you have already had it repaired, they will reimburse you for everything you spent for having it repaired. The offer is only good until April of 2007 so hurry up! I am shipping my laptop to dell and they are repairing it for free and shipping it back to me. All the details are found on that website, and I know it sounds too good to be true but it is not so hurry up and submit your claim.

It would appear that Dell is being sued for the same issue in Canada:

Hmmmmm - lots of Dell inspirons available on ebay for spare parts....Ever wonder why???
I sure hope this lawsuit will also involve those of us who own inspiron 5160's as well since there is definitely a problem with those as well!
Pi$$ed off in Michigan - I feel your pain! A $1500 laptop should certainly last more than 2 years!! Never again DELL - NEVER AGAIN!!!

The Dell 5160, 1100, 1150, and 5100 are all being included in another suit and many others are to follow soon.
Check the law firms web site at www.lundellsettlement.com to be included.

I have one o these as well, and live in Canada. I was notified of the offer to repair or compensate me for costs already incurred, which was the case with me. Last winter, the laptop wouldn't power on unless you squeezed the front leff corner as you powered up, and then you had to hold it. I had to send it for repair to Texas, and they told me the motherboard must be defective, as everything else worked. After some cajoling, the tech agreed to look further, and found a link for a Dell lass action in Belgium ,of all places. Same problem, but they were forced to replace or repair all the ones people complained about. Seems the Belgium government has a law which says if you sell a defective product you must replace or repair it. If you don't he said they would stop that company from doing business there. There actually was a video online showing that it was the result of the top of the keyboard being unable to stay off the motherboard, due to plastic supports that gave out. As a result, a diode on the MB would crach at one end and make an intermittent connection. The fix was simple, he just soldered the diode, I think. But it was still almost $200 with shipping and labour charges.
I contacted Dell when I became aware of the lawsuit, only to be told it didn't apply to Canada. Nice company. After over a dozen Dell computers, I am now the happy owner of a new HP..the damned Dell started acting up again...
Screw-em!!

In the US, you have until April 2nd.
I have a DELL 5160. And i am having similar kind of problems. The power does not work. And the laptop gets overheated, and shuts down automatically. Took it to the BEST-BUY technical service, and they had mentioned, that the pins that connect to the mother board have to soldered. it is going to cost me 200 USD, for the labour and parts. It will be nice, if we can have this reimbursed by DELL. i might actually call them up and see. will post, again, on how that goes.

Mine stoped working 3 years ago, all I get when I turn it on is a blinking green LED. Dell said I was only a week away from the end of the warrenty so it would not be covered. It would cost me 900.00 to have it fixed.
I quit paying Dell on the laptop, now I'm in collections and my attorney and I going to court with the collection company. F*ck Dell.

I just experience a repair on the power connection of my dell 5150. Spent $160.00 to repair it and when I got it back the laptop went down with the old message overheating fan not working properly. This had happened before but I thoughtit was a intermitent problem. So this time it did it several more time after restart and finally went down and would not start again. The heatsink at connection went bad and the motherboard is fried.
Well I just contacted dell via customer service and I was never notified of any class action lawsuit. Not by anyone. Now I find out the deadline was April 2007. And September 2007 for the extension of warranty for repair. I had this laptop covered for 3 years under the extended Dell warranty program. Never a problem til the warranty expires. Expired in March of 2007. We'll see what Dell says but I don't expect any help from them. Well there is always another laptop manufacturer to purchase future products from. I had purchased over 15 dells over the years for my small business. NO MORE DELLS FOR ME!!!

DON'T SPEND THE MONEY THERE. THEIR TECHS KNOW ABOUT THE MOTHERBOARD PROBLEM AND I WOULD BUY A RE-FURBISHED MOTHERBOARD REBUILT BY A TECH WHO KNOWS THE PROBLEM. REPLACE YOUR POWER CORD AND DC UNIT. THEN MAKE SURE YOUR POWER CONNECTION WHERE THE CORD HOOKS INTO IS NOT MOVING BACK AND FORTH.
MINE HAD TO BE REPAIRED. THERE IS NOT FLEXIBILITY IN DELL'S CONNECTION PORT.
THEN MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY WASN'T ON THE RECALL, THEY RUN HOT.
OR JUST TRASH IT. THAT WOULD SAVE YOU MONEY. BUY ANOTHER BRAND!!
NO MORE DELLS FOR ME!!!!

My 5150 Three Yrs Old & Has Had Constant Problems Since New. No Earthly Communicable Customer Support Exists, And The Unit Has Spent 75-80% Of It's Life Unusable. Now It Has Completely Died, Had It Diagnosed Several Places & Determined Mother Board Completely Gone, And Will Cost More To Repair Than Price Of (another Brand) A New Laptop.
