ok, basically you should double click the zip file and it will creat a folder on the directory where it is, however, sometimes it wont create it by the same name.

Usually I just use the double-click method for unzipping stuff on a mac. Occasionally I will create a new folder, and move the .zip into there. Then I'll use Terminal and the command line "unzip" command.

If you're looking for a quality unzipping utility, like winRaR and WinZip, "Stuffit Expander" is the most commonly used OS X unzipping tool...

Why cannot Zipeg open some ZIP archives?

Most common reason is corrupted archive file. Try to download archive again.

Another reason - archive is password protected or encrypted. Zipeg does not handle encrypted or password protected archives yet.

instead of that using BetterZip - 1.3.1 :

zipeg 1.2.2 is out - claims to handle archives better.

Give The Unarchiver (http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html) a shot. It's a pretty powerful replacement for OS X's builtin archive handler.

Go into terminal and type in: unzip <filename.zip>

I know it at least works in Fedora Core Linux. Can someone confirm if this works in OS X too?

Yes, you can unzip from the CLI in OS X with "unzip."

mac osx 10.4 does not, I repeat, DOES NOT, posses a built-in unzipping functionality. I'm running at this moment, and on this forum because just double clicking on it doesn't bloody work. If you consider "not a valid .dmg archive" error message a successful result, by all means, insist otherwise.

Actually, OS X 10.4 does have an unzipping utility built in - it's called BOMArchiveHelper. You can find more information on its wikipedia entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOMArchiveHelper - It's alright, but I prefer to use the Unarchiver on 10.4 - http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html - which handles many more compressed file types.

As we noted above, you can also use the "unzip" command when you're in the terminal.

The error message you posted suggests to me that you're not working with a zip file, but a dmg file, and that the dmg file is somehow corrupted. Can you post more information?

I agree I cannot find any unzip programs on my Mac OS 10.4. I need the easiest way to unzip. I am new to Mac, totally confused and frustrated.

Please refer to that thread. It details how to unzip .zip files with passwords however it will still work the same for you by not including the -P flag I mentioned.

In Tiger (10.4.11):

1. If zipped, double-click.

2. To zip, click on file and select (from Finder menu bar) File > Create archive of "(name of the highlighted file)"

When a zip file is double-clicked, you'll see "Unarchiver" in the progress bar title.

There is a new trick: the .piz extension. Since many mail handlers are filtering out or blocking messages with .zip attachments, folks are hand-changing the extension to .piz. Change it back and go.

Hi Folks - My Mac, running Leopard, has decided to use Stuff-it by default to expand any file that has been stuffed or zipped. I don't have Stuffit on this computer any more and so tried to do Ctrl-click to get the unzip option I thought I remembered but can't get past the default. Advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Right/Ctrl-click on a .zip file, choose "Get Info".

In the Info window, go down to the "Open with:" popup, and see if "Archive Utility.app" is in the list. If it is, choose it. If not, choose "Other..." and go to "Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices" and pick "Archive Utility.app".

Once you have Archive Utility selected, be sure and click the "Change All..." button below the popup menu. That should change it so that Archive Utility will be used anytime you double-click a .zip file from now on.

"Zipping" is a method of compressing a file. This makes it smaller, enabling you to save space, download the file faster, and email it. Logically, "unzipping" is the opposite--decompressing the file.

Most modern operating systems have a zip utility built in. However, you can also buy or download for free 3rd-party zip utilities. One for the Mac is available here: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19139. It's the Mac version of 7-zip, which is a good program.

As for your iPod, have you looked over your user's manual? That really is the best place to start. To transfer music from your computer to your iPod, you'll need to connect your iPod. It should have come with the cable. It's really no different from plugging it into a PC.

To get the music/movies onto your computer, you'll need to purchase the files from a site, such as iTunes. I can't help you with iTunes, though; maybe someone else can. I don't use it, and don't really plan to. I buy my music from eMusic, since they allow you to use it as you want to. You can also rip CDs to your computer and put them on your iPod, but that's probably not something you're ready to do yet.
