Hey all I was looking around earlier for a cheap laptop that'd be decent at doing anything that wasn't too multimedia intensive and was wondering if such a laptop exisits at around the $400 price range. I know dell has some ~$500 laptops but I don't want to spend a bunch of cash on a laptop that sucks (read: celeron) but beyond that is out of my budget too. Pretty much is there a laptop with a centrino, 512 mb ram, and integrated wireless out there on the cheap these days?

One word for you - used.
You're not going to find a centrino system new for less than $600-$700 or so.

shotgun - $150
some shells - $20
a person with a $2000 worth centrino system - priceless

getting out of jail - just keep rolling the dice.......

I'd hit up Craigslist or ask around to see if anybody's selling, or I'd lower my expectations - like Josh said, it is quite impossible to buy a centrino system at even $500.

Well, unless you like playing the rebate game when a big box store has a giant sale.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy used, so long as I got a look at it first. That's why I'd look around Craigslist, and if you see something that may be worth it, set up a time to meet in person and give the merch a thorough inspection before handing over your cash. It's a lot harder to pull scams if you actually have to meet somebody in person and show them a working product.

Dell sells what are called "n-series" desktops that have no operating system installed. I don't think they offer this on laptops, but you might be able to special order if you call them.

Technically, they ship with FreeDOS.

Useful, eh?
