I just recently installed a new motherboard (with the same onboard soundcard) but now the sound isnt working at all, I cant even open up the volume conrtol manager, it says i dont have any sound device installed. Im using Realtek AC'97 Audio drivers.
I also have a bunch of "?" next to some devices called "unknown" in the "other devices" tab in device manager
Your motherboard must've come with a driver CD. I'd install all of the drivers (including reinstalling the sound drivers) from there, or from the motherboard manufacturer's website. That should (hopefully) take care of your audio problems and make some of those question marks disappear.
When you double-click on the unknown device, does it have any additional info? Device type? Manufacturer?

ive installed the drivers from the motherboard installation disk numerous times; it says Realtek AC'97 driver is installed and working, i think something is wrong with the drivers that come with XP. I looked at other articels and found that many people said to uninstall Microsoft Kernel Audio Device and Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver and reboot. I did this it didnt help.
Hmm...
What is listed under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" in the Device Manager? Does it have the AC97 listed?

What is the ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver? //not familiar with ATI products, it might be causing problems
Is the AC97 listed as working properly under "Device Status" when you double-click on it, and is it enabled?

yes the AC'97 is working properly, the ATI thing is for onboard graphics, I have a PCIe x16 Graphics card; thats why i dont have the ATI driver installed
Hmm...
Did the sound work at all after you changed the motherboard? Or was it not working from the first time you booted with the new board?
When you say you can't open up the volume control manager, do you mean the volume control in the taskbar by the clock, or the "Sounds and Devices" tab in the Control Panel? If you can get into the "Sounds and Devices" tab in the control panel, then you should be able to set the AC97 as the default audio output device.

There is no icon in the taskbar, when i open the one from the control panel it says there is no mixer device installed.
Hmm...
What's the motherboard manufacturer and model? Have you tried downloading the newest drivers from the manufacturer's website directly?
My last few suggestions are to try Start -> Run and run msinfo32, then under "Hardware Resources" look under Conflicts/Sharing to see if there are any hardware conflicts.
I think your problem is one better handled hands-on by the OSCR underground. Call 626-TECH to make appointment.

the manufacturer is DFI, the model is INFINITY RS482
Hmm, try this:
Start -> Run, services.msc
Double-click "Windows Audio" and set Startup Type to automatic. Just make sure the service is started.
Restart.
If that doesn't work for you, then I'd definitely make an appointment with the OSCR Underground. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
EDIT: Also, make sure the sound card is enabled in your BIOS.
//officially out of suggestions

fixed!!
solution: when all else fails use the REPAIR option for windows XP.
to access this option place the windows xp CD in your CD-Rom and reboot your computer. (it doesnt matter if you use the winXP cd that came with ur comp, u can use a friends or buy a new one, just have a product key. if xp came with your comp it product key can be found on the sticker attached to your computer). If your bios is set to boot from Hard Drive first you must select boot from CD-Rom.
Heres the important part, after the CD boots select INSTALL not REPAIR.
It will search for other windows versions on your comp. When it finds a previous install for XP hit "R" for repair. Let the comp do its job it will load files and restart automatically, after this process you will be asked to register with microsoft and possibly activate your product. (read those very clear instructions that are given to you straight from the setup program) After this everything whould work OK.
NOTE: I didnt have to unistall previous drivers to get the device to work, the problem lie in Windows itself therefore it only makes sense to repair windows instead of spending hours trying to fix drivers that are perfectly fine.
If this doesnt work and you've exhausted all other resources, your only option is to reinstall windows. You can google guides for reinstalling windows, I hope this helps everyone !!!

The ATI T200 creates a lot of different problems depending on which programs are running, which mbo your using and ...
In my case, the computer crashed, or rather instantly died/rebooted.
No warning, no blue screen - absolutely no nothing, just a black screen followed by a boot as if I'd just powered on.
When it first happend, I didn't pay attention, and couldn't recreate the incident, then I tried to run the game Renegate, and that did the trick every time, I then tried to run FarCry - no problem - Turok - no problem - 007 Nightfire - Bam! Nolf - Bam! Medal of Honor - Bam!
The solution was to disable the T200 driver, and after that all the games were playable as they used to be.
By the way, don't deinstall the driver, it'll only come back nest time you boot - "Found new hardware" .... you know.
I hope ATI solves the problem in their next release.
