Hey all,

My first time to the forums thanks to the assistant of an OSCR person in the ILC area... Anyways, my question is concerning Darwin Streaming Server or DSS. For those who do not know, this is the open source version of Apple's Quicktime Streaming Server.

Anyways, I am fairly techy but I have not been able to fully grasp or understand the DSS concept thus my posting. To my understanding I would be able to either submit a Quicktime movie from my hardrive OR (by using Quicktime Broadcaster, also free) I could have a camera feed go into Quicktime Broadcaster (QB) and have that encode for streaming, send to DSS which will then send out either my QB live video OR movie on the hardrive out to any computer over the internet or network that enters in the given address.

Now my questions are firstly, am I correct in my understanding as stated above. Secondly, can anyone please point me to a comprehensive guide to setting such a thing up OR give me instructions? I have a few movies that I would like to send out through DSS to whomever I give the address to at various locations and as I stream it they can receive it in real time. And when I am done I can just shut it down. Please help

Thank you,
TM

Couple of things first - One, what OS are you running? I'm finding instructions for Linux, but not much else. Two, are you in the dorms? If so, it's highly likely that port 554 could be blocked on the outgoing. You'd need to find a port that isn't already running a service that was open so that you could run the stream over it.

As Josh points out, port 554, which is the standard rtsp -Real Time Streaming Protocol- port, is very likely blocked if you are in a UofA residence hall. Rescomp Acceptable Use Policy is very clear on this (http://www.rescomp.arizona.edu/guides/aup.php). And as a matter of fact, there are some very good reasons for this. So if you are in a UofA hall, I'm afraid OSCR can't assist you in circumventing the rules.
On the other hand, if you aren't in a hall, and this doesn't apply, Go For It! Darwin is an excellent product and was, at least a while ago, available for a variety of OSs, including Win NT (that was a while ago). In fact, we ran our original streaming services on a Darwin NT box, with the OS gutted of anything not needed. A side benefit of trimming the OS was it made the world's worst security OS, one of the best!
If you need streaming space for an instructional project, OSCR has streaming services and space for student use. You can get in touch with our streaming media guru, Chris Kaufmann. Check the OSCR web site, staff menu item, for contact info. If you are interested in working with streaming media, you can check out taking UNVR397W or UNVR397C. That is the Student Technology Preceptor class, which pairs students interested in learning more about rich media and technology, with staff or faculty who need help in those categories. OSCR supports this program, and there are always needs for video and streaming people.
But if you ARE in a residence, your really don't want to go down this path in your room. There be Dragons There!

Hey thank you both for the help. I AM in a dorm however I wanted to use this technology over the summer for distributing movies to friends at set time frames. But thank you for pointing that out, I did not know it was not allowed so that is good to know for the future. BUT I will be using this over the summer (and I guess I cannot practice now while in the dorms unless I go off campus). But do you have any tutorials for DSS for Mac OS X 10.4.6?

Thank you

Thank you! I will read around, experiment in the summer (since I cannot do such on campus) and probably post some more questions then haha. Until then, have a great summer!

Sorry, I am afraid we don't use Darwin Streaming Server in OSCR. All of our streaming is done using a Quick Time Streaming Server.
