Well for whatever reason, Windows XP has decided to start performing NTFS compression on tons of files on my hard drive, including system files. The system is taking a huge performance hit, and disk fragmentation has jumped to an astronomical 30%.

Even when I force it to decompress the entire C: drive, it somehow starts recompressing them. I have indexing disabled and there's plenty of HD space left. I don't have any viruses or spyware, and XP is totally up to date and patched.

I'm totally stumped as to why this is happening and it is quite frustrating since the system is slowing down so much. I'm this close to just backing up my documents and reinstalling Windows (I can get it back up and running with all the drivers in <60 minutes).

I changed the option to only compress old files if they hadn't been accessed in 99999 days (default is 50). I don't know why it would start compressing system files like Explorer though.
