Hello, I just had to reinstall my XP operating system and now my DVD/CD drive wont read anything. I think the problem is that I have to install some kind of operating system for the DVD/CD but I am unsure where to find this stuff, and if i will have to pay for it.

Would be very grateful for any help from someone who knows more than I do...

/Martina

Hi Martina, could you please explain what you mean when you say your DVD/CD drive won't read anything?

What happens when you insert a CD or DVD into the drive? Does anything show up in My Computer?

Martina,

Also, do you know the model of your computer/the DVD/CD drive itself? I think your suspicions are correct in that your particular drive model may not have its driver automatically included in the Windows XP install. I actually don't know if Windows XP comes with any pre-installed drivers, but that's beside the point. If you can tell us what model your computer is and, even better, what model your drive is perhaps we can help more.

Frankly, if XP didn't have the driver I'd be surprised. I've personally never run into a drive whose drivers weren't built into XP. Even if XP doesn't have the driver, there is more than likely a "generic" driver that will suffice.

XP doesnt have the driver. If you reload your XP then you have to install the drivers too. So yeah you probably have to download a generic driver.

Martina, check if you have the driver installed:

Right-click My Computer, select Properties
Click the Hardware tab
Click Device Manager
Look under DVD/CD-ROM drives

If your drive is listed and has no yellow exclamation points next to it, you have a driver.
