Does anyone know how I can get my internet connection to work through my airport express? I already have my speakers and printer running wirelessly thanks to it but I can't get the internet to work. Yes, I have registered the airport express' MAC address in student link. Still no luck. F.Y.I. I live on campus in the dorms.

Well, unless the user agreement has changed, you're not technically allowed to use wireless routers in the dorms.

But I will say this as general advice: you need to have all of your network cards registered with whatever/whoever is controlling the network you're accessing. That includes your wired ethernet card MAC address, your computer's airport card (or wireless card) MAC address, and the airport express' MAC address. So, lets say that next year you decide to move into an apartment with lots of cinder blocks and for whatever reason need an airport base station (which you have secured by requiring MAC address registration) to signal through an Airport express. You not only need to make sure that the Airport express is able to access the network, but all other machines who will access the network.

I would also remind you that you're on Rescomp's turf and you've agreed to play by Rescomp's rules when you use the U of A network. I'm pretty sure those rules say nay nay to unauthorized wireless networking in the dorms.

You know, I've been telling people that for quite some time, but two clicks made us both wrong:
"Wireless routers are not directly supported by ResComp. If you choose to install and use a wireless router, it is your responsibility to make sure that any device you connect to the network complies with the Acceptable Use Policies. General instructions for securing your Wireless router for use on the ResComp Network are provided below..."

Basically, they're saying that you can put up a wireless network if you like, but if someone hacks the Pentagon from your wireless connection, you'll be the one going to prison.

Well, that's good then. I actually amended my comments (and boo on me for not noting that, sorry) to make sure that OSCR wasn't endorsing improper use. But I feel better now.

So, Jakerich, you need to now configure your wireless network. I've always made sure to hide my network's name (i.e. not broadcast that you have a wireless network running), password protected it with encryption (what level you use is up to you, I have to deal with my roommate's old computers, so its not as good as I'd like), and MAC filter it.

If you'd like any advice on how to do those things specifically using the Airport, just post it here and we'll get you up and running securely.
