I have around 5 gigs of data on my laptop that needs to be backed up on a dvd, but I do not know if there is a way to transfer the data from my laptop to one of the U of A computers in order to burn it on a dvd. Does anybody know how to transfer it directly or if the OSCR has the hardware/software to do that?

Hi there. Does your laptop have a DVD recorder on it? The drive would say something like DVD+RW on it. If so, it should be fairly easy to just record all your data to the disc.
If you'd like to schedule an appointment with us in the Underground, we'd be happy to assist you in backing up your data. All we ask is that you purchase some recordable DVDs in advance. They're available in the bookstore (downstairs in CATS).
Call 626-8324 to make an appointment. If you'd like to ask for an appointment with me, feel free to when calling.

My laptop does not have a dvd burner or firewire capability and I don't have a way of transferring that much data over the internet. The data files are too big to be written on a cd so I need a way to transfer them to a computer that does have a dvd burner. Any ideas?

If you've got an ethernet jack, you can bring your machine into the Zone during one of my shifts, that's 3:00-7:00 MWF and 4:00-7:00 Tu Tr. Should be a simple enough matter to transfer your data over ethernet, either to one of our servers, or directly to one of the computers.

The OSCR Underground has USB hard drives and DVD burners, we would be happy to copy your data onto one of our drives and then burn it using our burner.
