My Windows Security Center insists that "Virus Protection" (i.e. Sophos) is out of date, even when the update process runs every day or every other day. What problem do these two guys have?

Windows Security Center has that issue with SOPHOS, I've never figured out why. As long as the Updater is sucessfully running every day, you're fine.

If you are annoyed by the tooltips popping up all the time saying SOPHOS is out of date, follow the steps below. I have also attached a screenshot of the process.

Open the Control Panel by clicking on the Start Menu, and selecting Control Panel.
In the Control Panel window, double click on the shield icon labeled, Security Center.
The Windows Security Center is now open. On the left hand side of the window in the Resources task pane, click on the link, "Change the way Security Center alerts me".
The Alert Settings dialog window will now open and you can uncheck which alerts you want to disable. In your case, the Virus Protection alert is the one you want to uncheck. If you have any questions/problems, feel free to ask in this topic.

Great...That stopped the annoying red shield pop up.
Thanks

A couple of days ago I replaced Norton Antivirus with sophos on my desktop at home. I made sure to get rid of any trace of NAV I could find on my system before installing sophos. The install and initial update of sophos worked fine, but when I restarted my system the remote update monitor and intercheck failed to initialize, and I recieved a windows security center message stating that sophos was not running. I attempted to initialize both the remote update monitor and intercheck manually, and was unsuccessful, although the sophos scan program initiallized fine. I opened the task manager and discovered that the processes for the remote update monitor and intercheck were running, but the GUI's would not initialize and the taskbar icons were absent, and I still received the windows security center warning. I reinstalled sophos and the remote updater, and the situation persisted after rebooting. Any suggestions?

Patrick, which version of Sophos did you install......4 or 5? If you're getting errors about Remote Update Monitor, that means you have the old version.
