Hello!
I'm new to the mac world, and I was wondering if it was possible to transfer an Office file from a Mac to a PC (using office 2001 on a mac).
Thank you!

Nope. The operating systems run programs totally different ways, so you can't do that.

Are you asking about opening a Word document originally written on a Mac on your PC?

you should be able to open a MS Word document (filename.doc) written on a PC with MS Word on a Mac (or the other way around). Sometimes there can be aq glitch or a missing font, but it almost always works without a problem.
(I think Josh meant the actual application: Microsoft Word for PC/Mac - not a document.)

I've found that saving the file in Rich Text Format makes it easy to transfer between platforms; you can open Rich Text with almost anything (Wordpad, text-edit, etc.).

Andrew is correct. If it is a .doc on your PC, the Mac Office will be able to open it. You may get a letter looking a little funny, but you can change that by reformatting all the text. It will work fine.

Actually, I have another question. I want to buy a used laptop. Apparently, the battery isn't functionnal. Will I be able to use the laptop with only the power adaptor or do I need to buy a new battery? I know it might sound like a stupid question, but I really suck in computers... and it will be my first laptop...
Thanks!

It will still work when plugged-in as far as I know. I used to have an iBook and I have used it without a battery or with a dead battery.
But I would test that out before you buy it just incase.
