I have a question for you all.

Lately, when I open ZIP files (which show up as folders in XP), and I drag a file out of it onto the desktop, the file just doesn't show up. No matter how many times I drag the file out of the ZIP folder, nothing happens. The computer pauses for an instant, as if it is removing the file.

If I hit "extract all" and have XP decompress the entire folder, it's fine. Any ideas what's going on here? BTW I do not have WinZip nor do I plan to install it.

If I recall, doing the basic drag drop first extracts to a temp folder, then copies from the temp folder to your destination.
Extract all sends it directly to your destination.
So, it sounds like it's extracting to temp, then not moving the file, for whatever reason.
You could try using something like winRAR.

Josh speaks the truth. If you look at the extract location it puts it into a temp folders and moves it back out. No clue why it would be doing that (not moving it out) though.

Question: Why do you not want to install WinZip or WinRar. These programs were made to compress and handle zipped files far better than windows built it one will every do.

There is also a great open-source program called 7-zip that I have been using - you can get it from sourceforge

Well my question is why did this suddenly change? It used to work just fine.

Frankly, I don't want WinZip because it's just one more program that's not necessary...XP handles ZIP files internally.

I will investigate why it is not creating some sort of TEMP folder, thanks for the idea.
