Text Encoding: Question mark inside a diamond

So I've got a question. I'm running Safari with UTF-8 encoding and every once in a while I get a page that displays text with that crazy question mark inside a diamond. From what I understand this is some symbol not recognized by the default encoding.
My question is, is there any why to rectify this? Or is it just something I have to deal with?

You are correct that the symbol is not recognized by UTF-8 - that is what causes the problem.

Why are you using UTF-8? I use "Western (ISO Latin1)" because it is the default. I haven't had that problem, but I only view pages that are in English.

You can change the encoding by going to

Safari->Preferences->Appearance->Default Encoding

and try another encoding from the drop-down.
