Hi

My friend has a Mac, and I have a PC, and we are trying to find a program that will allow us to communicate using just voice (no video).

Does anyone know of a FREE one available?

Thanks,
Ty

AOL Instant Messenger & MSN Messenger (also Trillian) will allow you to do audio/video chat.

MSN Mac version does not support audio chat and it lacks a ton of features the Windows version does, go figure. Trillian's audio chat feature sucks and its not available for Mac. AIM Mac version might support audio chat, but I'm not totally sure how good it is since a new version hasn't come out for awhile. I don't think it is possible to audio (sound only) between Mac iChat and PC AIM.

Correct me if I'm wrong Mac users :D

My recommendation for you Ty (if you want to use the same program to talk to each other): Skype -- http://www.skype.com

Skype has a mac client, works great cross platform with PCs. Also iChat will work with any AIM account, and works cross platform with both audio and video chats.

Make sure you read the EULA...if you run Skype they will use your bandwidth while idle to route calls.

I have a PC and tried to audio chat with someone who has a Mac and we were unable to. They are logged on to iChat and I am logged on to AIM but when I click the talk button is says "this person is not available for the talk feature." We both have fire walls down too. Please help.

According to Apple, iChat AV 2.1 or later will connect with Win AIM for text or video conferencing. Audio conferencing only is not supported. Seems odd for a video conference to work but not just the audio portion. A codec mismatch I imagine.
But your best bet might be to try a third-party solution like Skype, Dan's info not withstanding.
Of course, you could buy a Mac. . . . . just kidding.

I'm just a random Google searcher who came upon your forum while searching for commercial vocie chat programs.

If you know Java, there is an interesting free voice chat program with source code at Planet Source Code. Go to:
http://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/ShowCode.asp?txtCodeId=4644&lngWId=2

The beauty of it is that it uses Java Applets, which should work on any browser that supports Java regtardless of OS.

Now the downsides:

-It happens to be set up with a sound format that the Mac can't handle - however, you can change one or two lines of code to tell it to use other tyes of files that are compatible with Mac and Windows.

-It is rather primitive, but it works, and you can give it commands to change the amount of compression, volume, etc. (it comes set up with scratchy sounding heavy compression, but you can experiment with the settings to improve sound quality).

-Someone in your group has to have a machine that has Java on it, and can act as the server for the rest of you - or, if you have a website, you can use the web server, provided it has Java installed.

-The documention is non-existent and the commenting is so-so, but the author will help you out if you can catch him on AIM (which was not too hard when I tried it).

Someone who knows Java could have fun customizing this thing and adding bells and whistles. I, unfortunately am not well versed in Java, so I have decided to look for some commercial product that already has the bells and whistles.

Qnext (http://www.qnext.com/) is about ready to release version 3, and this should solve your problem... voice, video, file sharing, compatible with AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc. Looks like Trillian except you don't have to pay to get the video portion. no word yet on when it will release.

Hey, i had that problem with my girlfriend who lives at the other end of the country. After being fed up with the inconsistant ichat and AIM, the search was on for a more reliable program, when it dawned on me! Skype is a european based internet telephone line. BUT it it also has the instant text chat AND the microphone chat that msn messenger, ichat and AIM all have. It works great between MAC and Widows and the quality is great (no cutouts at all) yup. Skype rocks, best of all its free.
