User:

Could you please be slightly more specific in the problem? What are you doing before you shutdown? Is this a pre-built computer (Dell/Gateway), or is it a laptop? How long between shutdown, and random restart does it occur?

If it is a laptop you could always stop by the DMRC Lab and have them take a look at it for ya.

If it is a desktop I am thinking that it might just be a faulty PSU. I'd say try switching out your PSU with another one if you can and seeing if the problem still occurs.

another option could be that the client has the CMOS setup to power on at a certain time. I know that i have done this from time to time so that my computer became my alarm clock everyday. Might want to check that. when the computer is starting up it will tell you what button to push to put you into the setup (every system has a different button). Then it would be one of the settings. I haven't done it in a while

Unit is a Hewlett Packard, Kayak XA, pentium 2. Unit is shut down using XP, "turn off computer". It powers on by itself at the same time every night. Not sure what wake on LAN means or where to look in the BIOS setup, if thats the problem. Possibly the PSU, but I'm skepticle about that one.

Ah, yes, now that you mention it turns on at the same time every night I would second Andy's comment. I'll go take a look later to see where it would be in the BIOS.

the first thing that you would notice in the BIOS is the system specifiications. The "alarm" or "wake up" feature is going to be in one of the more 'advanced' menus. I would try looking there. If you can figure it out then you can always come bring it in to the OSCR Underground located at ILC 136.
