I'm just trying to use the wireless internet on campus. I have a brand new iBook. The iBook picks up the internet, it says UA wireless, but I have no internet. I don't know how to do this. I tried putting in the base station ID on student link but I'm not sure if that is what does it? Does anyone know how to do this? U of A has poor online support because I've searched for a simple guide to doing this for thirty minutes and found nothing.

In Student Link, you have to register the MAC/hardware address of your AirPort card. It's the exact same process as registering the network card built into the computer (the one you physically plug a cable into).

If you'd like assistance in registering, feel free to drop by OSCR Underground in the ILC, we'd be happy to help!

To use your iBook you must register two MAC addresses in Student Link (let me know if you don't know how to do this and I'll describe it). The first is for your ethernet card. To do this, go to "System Preferences" (the icon with a grey apple and a light switch on the left) and select "network" which is the grey sphere with the stars. Then use the "show" drop down menu and select "Built in Ethernet" and then click on the far right tap that says "ethernet". Your MAC address is your ethernet ID. This allows you to use the wired networks. Then use that same drop down menu to select "AirPort." Your Airport ID is your AirPort's MAC address. Register this to use the wireless access.

You should also know that to access some web based services at the U of A as well as your e-mail client and iChat you will have to install and run the U of A's VPN (unless something has changed since I was on campus). Let me know if you need help doing this.
